The Slumberers
The Slumberers
How do Gol and Den know each other?
Gol and Den are cousins, and close as anything. When they were younger, they barely knew each other. In fact, Den didn’t really like Gol at all. She always wanted to play with him upon the mountain, while he was perfectly happy being alone. But as they grew older, they began to realize how alike they truly were. They both loved drifting, and both saw the world in much the same way. And so, after much consideration, they decided to drift off together.
Gol and Den are known as the Golden Slumberers. They snooze upon the clouds drifting past the highest peak of Wilheon Mountain. Legend says the mountain’s heart is forged from atomic number seventy-nine — a notion far too frightening for the Golden Slumberers to investigate. So, although they call the mountain home, they choose instead to sleep just outside.
Do Gol or Den ever come back down the hill?
Unknown, but not likely. Some years ago, they would often be seen together in the nearby town, particularly at Celebrations. They would join in games with the townsfolk; Den especially would drink merrily until he fell asleep, while Gol would secretly help him to win at games, whether or not they were on the same team. And how they would dance...
But life upon the mountain changed once the Mayoos began to take over. Whatever peace the slumberers once knew slowly faded, and the world below no longer felt welcoming to them. In the end, the only answer seemed to be drifting — together, and for always, far above the noise of everything beneath them.
